When and how do we get started?

Many clients are understandably stronger at their ‘day jobs’ than they are at being ‘professional consulting buyers’. RER’s approach is very straightforward, and we will co-create the right scope together.

Great! Let’s get to it! The process is simple:

1. Introductory discussion (30-45 mins, $0)
– Meet & greet
– Understanding your needs
– Initial go/no-go – Can I help or not?
2. Draft proposal (typically within 1 week)
– RER hours and duration
– Approach details
– Supplementary staff recommendations
3. Refine & finalize the proposal (together)
– Collaborative approach
– Align on timing and other details
– Establish key milestones

Phase 1: Lay of the Land
Duration: 1–2 weeks
Typical Hours: ~10 hrs/week
Description: Discovery, listening, and relationship building.
Sample Activities: Review key documents, 1:1s with primary client, Join selected meetings, Meet the broader team
Phase 2: Initial Insights
Duration: 2–3 weeks
Typical Hours: ~10 hrs/week
Description: First observations, perspectives, and ideas.
Sample Activities: Synthesize thoughts based on Phase 1, 1:1s with stakeholders, Begin shaping themes and direction
Phase 3: Focus & Align
Duration: 2–3 weeks
Typical Hours: ~10 hrs/week
Description: Articulate priorities and engage stakeholders.
Sample Activities: Collaborative SWOT, Prioritization exercises, Build the case for change, Draft messaging, Secure leadership buy-in

Phase 4: Mobilize
Duration: 2–3 weeks
Typical Hours: ~20 hrs/week (intensive)
Description: Plan build, define roles, and establish ways of working.
Sample Activities: Develop right-sized project plan, Define program cadence and team roles, Lead kickoff meetings, Structure the path forward
Phase 5: Steady-State
Duration: 3–4 weeks
Typical Hours: ~10 hrs/week
Description: Work the plan with ongoing program cadence and progress tracking.
Sample Activities: Drive day-to-day progress, Provide status updates and executive comms, Support training for lower-cost PMs, Serve in a “Chief of Staff” capacity
Phase 6: Sustain & Steer
Duration: As long as needed
Typical Hours: Flexible
Description: Continuous improvement and driving the next set of wins.
Sample Activities: Lead strategic check-ins, Identify future priorities, Coach internal leads, Guide long-term ownership transition

Outcome: We transform ambiguity into a clear, prioritized plan, build the momentum to deliver tangible results, and empower your team with new capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

RER’s intentionally lean contracting model may feel new to you.

Let’s proactively answer some common questions.

What can you realistically accomplish in just 10 hours a week?2025-06-11T21:03:44+01:00

A lot. Decades of experience equip me with a toolkit full of accelerators and the ability to very quickly connect the dots.

We start with focus, not volume. My strongest value (and bang for your dollar) at my level of seniority is more about enabling excellence and setting it in motion.

When we need more horsepower for a task, I am happy to step in but will often advise you to consider lower-cost options from either my network of partners or from yours. With my coaching, these resources can be quite capable!

Why should I fund your ‘onboarding’ during the Lay of the Land phase?2025-06-11T21:04:09+01:00

Firstly, I would caution you to beware of any consultancy that says they can jump in and do a great job without listening to you, understanding your needs, and knowing your people.

You and your team are a treasure trove of knowledge about your space. Tapping into this is critical to our success together.

Also, I have found that teams that know and like each other produce better results.  For such a minor investment, the upside is worth it.

The ramp-up to 20 hours feels like a planned upsell. Am I locked into that?2025-06-11T21:04:32+01:00

Not a planned upsell at all. It’s just a reality that some progress steps require more effort than others.

Think of this like launching a boat past the breakers… it takes a short, intense burst of heavy rowing to get to open water, and then the work becomes more manageable.

All in, you’re in control of the hours we spend together.  We will only ever vary from the baseline contract with your full knowledge and agreement that the objective is worth the push. Then we return to baseline as soon as the program is assured to be in a healthy place.

My team is already swamped. Is this just going to create more meetings?2025-06-16T18:07:42+01:00

I have consistently found that many teams are “succeeding through brute force”.  But, in my experience, it is clear that being busy is not the same as being productive. I believe in installing “just enough” structure and driving a well-run program to help teams work smarter.

We don’t have a burning fire right now. Why should we start before the need is acute?2025-06-25T14:55:06+01:00

It’s true that you can choose to buy a fire extinguisher when you see flames… but it is advisable to avoid the fire fighting in the first place.

If your space is one that will face evolving challenges over the course of time, and you have a sense that you would benefit from the Player / Coach skills like I possess, let’s partner together. We will move your team from reactive fire fighting to proactive strategy realization.
